Sounds like a fairly good summary. I know that during the 1970s I was intently following the particle theory developments and do recall things being very much in turmoil with competing theories. Briefly, in the mid 1970s, it even looked like I might end up working at CERN in Switzerland (I was called for an interview, nice holiday jaunt across Europe). The future, however, turned out quite different.
